FURNITURE MAKING

Our master craftsmen use traditional techniques elevated to the level of art, reaching a height of beauty and radiance that can only be achieved by the human hand. Each craftsman works at their own traditional bench of Austro-Hungarian design, and our equipment is only ever operated manually. We believe this philosophy imbues every piece with a warmth and soul that is, quite simply, without equal.

VENEER

In the hands of our master craftsmen, veneer arrangement becomes high art. Beginning with once-in-a-lifetime woods, we create veneer patterns that are elevated to the level of works of art in their own right. This can only be achieved with a combination of nature’s gifts and the perfect coordination of the eye and hand.

INLAY

Inlay is a hallmark of our work and it is always done in the traditional way. This means creating a rebate, by hand, and inlaying a contrasting material. This is a painstakingly time-consuming process, involving an artistic eye and a mastery of hand skill. Here, a Macassar ebony dining table top is inlaid with an intricate design of synthetic ivory.

CHAIR MAKING

“A chair is a very difficult object. A skyscraper is almost easier.” –

Ludwig Mies van der Rohe

In our hands, chair making is an art. We have made over 1,000 custom chairs, each fitted to our patron’s exact anthropomorphic measurements. In addition to fitting the chair for tailored comfort, we also engineer perfect joinery so that our creations will fit perfectly into our patron’s lives for generations to come.

MARQUETRY

Our approach to marquetry is consistent with all that we do. We never use computers or CNC-controlled lasers. Instead, we create all of our marquetry by hand, using a jeweller’s saw and our extraordinary collection of exotic woods. We make no use of dyes, stains or paints—only the colors created by Mother Nature.

MAP CABINET

Our marquetry can take on many forms, occasionally stretching into the abstract. For this piece the client desired a rectilinear shaped cabinet depicting a series of island atolls. We achieved this using 565 pieces of hand-cut marquetry derived from a single amboyna burl log. All of the colors are completely natural with the unusually colored outside sections of the log used to represent the ocean background.

MADE WITH THE FINEST TOOLS

The majority of our tools are American made, and many are antiques, with the oldest dating back to 1870. We choose to keep our craft alive by using these machines because they carry a spirit and they were built to last not one, but many lifetimes. They are also capable of being easily modified for the myriad custom processes that we employ in our shop.

MACHINES

Every machine in our shop is operated by a human being. We do not employ CNC cutting machinery or computer-controlled lasers. Instead, the majority of our machines are antiques, most built in America between 1890 and 1970. We find these machines to be simpler to operate, more accurate, and more substantially built. We maintain our machinery the old-fashioned way, cleaning and waxing monthly. When we need a part, we make it in our own machine shop. We find that operating machinery of this kind brings us closer to the reasons why we originally began making furniture.

TOOLS

For a craftsman, a tool is like a best friend. We take care of them, we sharpen them, and we can’t live without them. Over time, they become a literal extension of our own hands. And for every year we hold them, they just become more familiar.
