Hand worked metals

Our metalworking shop consists of only hand operated machines, and works in close collaboration with all other disciplines in the workshop. The result is the seamless combination of wood and metal in both function and form.

METAL PROCESSES

We cut, mill, drill, turn, grind, weld, polish, and finish every metal part we make. We create patterns for castings and then hand chase, bringing the final form vividly to life. This Brad Pitt–designed club chair has satin gold details, with the surface finely hand sanded to a 1500-grit finish prior to the application of the 24-karat gold.

LIGHTING

This re-creation of a Ruhlmann beaded chandelier includes genuine Czech, handmade crystals. Originally designed in 1925, our re-creation can be customized to any size and voltage. Our workshop can produce any type of light fixture one can dream of—if it can be imagined, it can be made.

Mokume gane

Mokume gane translates as “wood-grained metal”, and is the Japanese art of hand forging different types of metal into a spiral laminate. The metal billet is then acid etched to reveal the inherent grain. This time-intensive process produces remarkable patterns, which are capable of being shaped into a variety of accents, handles and buttons. Here, metal is shaped into the head for a snakewood walking stick.

UNDER ONE ROOF

Having every discipline under one roof allows us to achieve the perfect integration of different techniques. Here, a pattern is hand carved and then cast in bronze. Next, we hand chase the carved bronze details, providing a one-of-a-kind surface quality. Finally, we fit custom cut alabaster panels which cast a soft, warm glow. In our hands, wood fits together perfectly with metal, leather, stone, and upholstery.
