MADE FOR STEINWAY

In 2010, 14 years after Pollaro created its first art-case piano, Steinway & Sons invited us to design a landmark historical instrument, their 600,000th serial number. Over the preceding 150 years, Steinway had celebrated other significant serial numbers by looking outside their factory and engaging contemporary artists to design art cases. The 100,000th Steinway, built in 1902 for the White House, is now in the Smithsonian National Museum of American History. The 300,000th piano, built in 1938 and presented to Franklin D. Roosevelt, resides in the White House in Washington, DC, and the 500,000th Steinway, built in 1986, is in a private collection.

Pollaro’s design for the 600,000th piano, based on the Fibonacci spiral, required five years and more than 3,000 hours to complete. The Fibonacci was sold in 2016 to a private collector for a record-setting price. Pollaro has created more Steinway art-case pianos than any firm in history.

There are 12,116 individual parts that comprise a Steinway grand piano. The action for just one key is made up of 57 individual parts; 4,500 parts are employed to move all 88 keys. Working with an instrument of this precision requires absolute mastery of our craft. Steinway has partnered with Pollaro to build a total of 26 art-case pianos over the past 25 years.

Brad Pitt began design work on this piano in 2013 for the main salon at Chateau Miraval, and Pollaro worked on bringing his vision to life for over three years. Composed of complex curved surfaces, the piano presented a highly challenging veneering project. A single, once-in-a-lifetime Royal Ebony log from our extensive collection of Macassar ebony provides the natural color and arresting grain pattern. Logs posessing this spectacular appearance are perhaps 1 in 10,000 specimens – true gifts from nature.
